Model-based evaluation of complete nitrogen removal through coupling nitritation-Anammox and DAMO

چکیده
The discovery of denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation (DAMO) enables the complete N removal from wastewater by utilizing the methane produced onsite from anaerobic digesters. This model-based study evaluates complete nitrogen removal by coupling nitritation-Anammox and DAMO in membrane biofilm reactors (MBfRs). The influences of nitritation produced NO2/NH4 ratio, methane supply and total nitrogen (TN) surface loading are explicitly analysed with the model which is evaluated with batch experimental data. Results show that the optimum NO2/NH4 ratio produced from nitritation for the Anammox-DAMO biofilm system is around 1.0 in order to achieve the maximum TN removal (over 99.0%), independent on TN surface loading. The corresponding optimal methane supply increases with the increasing TN surface loading.

Nitrogen removal by a nitritation-anammox bioreactor at low temperature.
Currently, nitritation-anammox (anaerobic ammonium oxidation) bioreactors are designed to treat wastewaters with high ammonium concentrations at mesophilic temperatures (25 to 40°C). The implementation of this technology at ambient temperatures for nitrogen removal from municipal wastewater following carbon removal may lead to more-sustainable technology with energy and cost savings. However, t...

Elevated nitrogen removal efficiencies from ammonium-rich wastewaters have been demonstrated by several applications, that combine nitritation and anammox processes. Denitrification will occur simultaneously when organic carbon is also present. In this study, the activity of aerobic ammonia oxidizing, anammox and denitrifying bacteria in a full scale sequencing batch reactor, treating digester ...
متن کاملPartial Nitritation/anammox and Canon – Nitrogen Removal Systems Followed by Conductivity Measurements
The deammonification process is a new biological promising method for a separate treatment of ammonium-rich digester supernatant. Its application can significantly reduce the nitrogen load in Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs). The method is a two-step process and it can be accomplished in two separate stages (partial nitritation and Anammox) or in a singe one (CANON). Both these systems were ...
متن کاملPartial nitritation ANAMMOX in submerged attached growth bioreactors with smart aeration at 20 °C.
Submerged attached growth bioreactors (SAGBs) were operated at 20 °C for 30 weeks in smart-aerated, partial nitritation ANAMMOX mode and in a timer-controlled, cyclic aeration mode. The smart-aerated SAGBs removed 48-53% of total nitrogen (TN) compared to 45% for SAGBs with timed aeration. Low dissolved oxygen concentrations and cyclic pH patterns in the smart-aerated SAGBs suggested conditions...
متن کاملEffect of granule size on autotrophic nitrogen removal in a granular sludge reactor.
Autotrophic nitrogen removal through sequential partial nitritation and anammox reactions can be achieved in biofilm reactors by controlling the oxygen concentration in the bulk liquid in such a way that nitrite oxidizers are outcompeted by anammox bacteria. In the case of granular sludge reactors, the granule size may influence the optimal range of oxygen concentration, as has been confirmed i...
